Its all about the engine isn’t it?

Kinja'd!!!

After my caffeine and diesel fueled brain storm that for some reason made me think that a Volvo five cylinder diesel would be a good idea, I thought, what else might work?

So, the ideas so far.

SHO Three litre V6.

Volvo five cylinder turbo diesel

Mercedes Benz five cylinder turbo diesel.

Ford Cologne 2 litre V6

Ford Cologne 2.8 litre V6

Ford Vulcan 3 litre V6

Kinja'd!!!

Obviously the Cologne and Vulcan engines are the simple ideas, both cologne engines I mentioned actually came out of Capri. Problem is both of those engines would need a heap of work. The 2.8 has been sitting in a driveway, in a snowbank for about 5 years. Also, there’s no timing cover on it, and with a Cologne, that means the oil pan is open to the air. So it’s likely a boat anchor.

The 2 litre is the most likely to work. It came out of my fathers 1979 Mk III that he swapped a pushrod 5.0 and T5 into. Problem here is, when it came out of the Capri, it was burning antifreeze faster than gasoline. Which could mean one of three things; one, a head gasket is blown. Pretty standard wear and tear, head gasket goes coolant gets through from the water jacket onto the cylinder. New gaskets, fresh coolant. In business. Two, gacket head. Slightly bigger problem, which means machine work. Expensive. Or new heads. Even more expensive. Especially since the 2 litre was a Germany only engine. Three, torched block. Engine is toast.

Good news is, with either Cologne, I already have a transmission that will work. A factory four speed from the 2 litre car.

Kinja'd!!!

The Vulcan came in Ranger and Mazda B series trucks. This is the simple way. Find a donor car, DONT fall in love with it like the last one, swap the bits, maybe get a Thunderbird super charger. Might do that regardless of what engine it gets.

Kinja'd!!!

The SHO was the genesis of this whole looney engine swap malarkey, so it still deserves a mention. At this point, I’ve got enough money into my SHO, which by the way, I bought to do this exact swap, that I can’t bring myself to kill it. What I can do is find an engine separately. Then find an M5OD-R1 transmission and then bolt it all in the Capri. I’ve done enough research that I feel confident that I could make the fuel injection and ignition system standalone.

Kinja'd!!!

Don’t ask me where the diesel idea came from, because I don’t know either. So obviously those idea aren’t really fleshed out since they probably won’t happen, cool as they would be. If some one knows where I can find a cheap, really cheap, five cylinder diesel and manual in a RWD setup, let me know. The two engines that came up were the Volvo D5 Turbo and the Mercedes Benz OM617.

Does Oppo have any ideas? There is already a Capri in this house with a 5 litre V8 so if I’m going to buy an engine, I want it to be something special. I already have the Cologne engines so they don’t count. Don’t worry about being reasonable or sensible. As long as you don’t mention LS swaps.

Don’t even think of saying LS swap. Matter of fact don’t mention Chevrolet or the Bowtie at all.

Thunderbird Turbo Coupe engine? Fairly sure they’re the same engine. Ooor how about the supercharged 3.8 from the Super Coupe?

I’m originally from the USA — any junkyard with a land rover would have them, and you could strip it down and order a more basic intake manifold for a four-barrel carb from any hot-rod magazine. Land Rover used points ignition on those through the 1990s, so it’s fairly simple.

Blown 350.

Source: A Volvo similar to yours with a blown 350 tried to race my friend’s GT-R (and was damn fast as well).

Interesting. Was the Rover/Buick V8 related to the Nailhead? I’ll keep an eye open in the scrap yards. But being Land rover related, won’t that jack up the price quite a bit?

Not really. And no, Nailhead is way old (1940s.) The Rover/Buick V8 was a 215ci all-aluminum block from the 1960s.

Volvo straight six from S80 is pretty nice engine and pretty easy to find. If it’s too big or powerful the straight 5 with 20 valves from S70 would produce nice amount of noise.

I’m not a fan of V6s so I always suggest straight engines over them.

One, I don’t have a Volvo. Not sure where you got that. And two, did you not read the last paragraph? Keep your chevies.

See now the problem with straight sizes is space in a Capri. To put a straight six in there might involve chopping out the firewall. And that’s the only in mangled panel on the car haha. Do you happen to know how long the six you mentioned is?

I did find the length at some point but cannot find or remember it anymore. It’s fairly short for a straight six. But it might still be a bit too long.

Keeping the Volvo theme, get a Volvo V8. Either a B36 or (more likely) a B8444S.

Never mind, just read that the XC90 engine is the B8444S. Might be hard to find a transmission to go behind it though.

Some guy in Australia has managed to shove a RB30 in his Capri. The firewall looks to be intact but I’m not totally sure. That is pretty long engine so I guess radiator has moved quite much forwards.

Here’s the thread about it.

Mid engined. It uses a transaxle. Wait. Muhahahahaha. A Capri is a hatchback. Mid engine Capri!?

Looking at that, it looks like he has clearanced the fire wall. But the radiator could come forward even further, so I guess a straight six is completely possible. Interesting.

Also fun fact, Land Rover kept the SAE bolt pattern on the bell housing so you can bolt a Buick trans right on.

If going diesel, >I< would advise the MB over the Volvo. When I was researching them a decade ago looking to get into a veggie-oil car, I saw many references to finicky Volvo injection pumps. So many that I ended up w/ a 126 even tho I much preferred the Volvo bodies. Just my opinion: YMMV.
